Caveat: (because we all know I can’t get enough of them), the official language of the Island, is English. Although I had done lots of reading on the Island and its history, I still could not disconnect from my brain that I was heading to Honduras. So immediately my brain switched into Spanish when the plane hit the tarmac. That is, until the cab driver said, “don’ speak no Spanish to me mon,” in a very clear, Caribbean-esque accent. Lesson learned. The majority of the Island is bilingual so fear not if you only float monolingually.
If You're A Diver...
Ziplining/Canopy tours should definitely be on your list. There are several places where you can do this, all pretty much the same, however the gregariousness and playful nature of the staff will make your experience that much more fun. Although, I don’t believe you can really go wrong, I suggest heading to Gumbalimba Park. A camera guy will follow you around and take fun shots. At the end, they will show you a DVD collection of your famous, and not so famous, action shots. You can purchase it for $20.00 USD. But if that is not in your budget, don’t worry. Bring your own camera or smart phone and they will be more than happy to take pics of you for your time capsule. Then you can have shots like this for your progeny to admire.
Tip: Tip the tour guide
CAYOS COCHINOS - On your foot tour, you will learn about these series of Cays (Keys – smaller islands), off the northern coast of Honduras. I suggest a day trip if that’s all you have time for. You leave early in the morning by boat, and return late day around 4:00-5:00 p.m. You can get a typical meal prepared for you and spend time with the people of the Cays while perhaps purchasing some of their local artesanía which they will be happy to share with you.
If you are looking for some good eats and local in town scenery, head to the West End in the evening. There you’ll have your selection of bars and restaurants. You can also flex that adventurous taste bud muscle by trying some very exotic fruits.
Whatever you do ... Just make sure you end the day like this.
